Trend dictates much of the way we design our spaces and window treatments. Our clients look to us for a"current" vision and a cohesive pattern in design. In keeping current with today's trend, Finestra has developed 7 new distinct finishes to add modern pizazz to your next project.

Harvest Gold creates an element of subtle glamour and lustrous matte gold detail. It's deep gold leaf base is antiqued with a light gray wash to create a matte finish and define the hand carved detail within the pieces.

Linen combines an off-white base with textural accents in ochre and buff. It adds a light textural layer to any window design.

Matte Black is a contemporary classic with clean lines and a low luster. It is a wonderful companion to rod iron architectural accents and lighting as well as bold graphic prints.

Rustic Taupe features a natural taupe with pearl gray overtones and subtle highlights of platinum to give depth to the smallest of carved details. This finish combines two of the hottest trends in color: tone on tone and the color gray.

Urban Bronze is a metropolitan mixture of deep russet tones, sunset gold and antique bronze. This metallic finish blends with both rustic and refined environments.

Weathered Wood features a walnut wood tone with a gray antique wash. It is naturally distressed to show its timeworn character and compliments both heirloom and modern-day decor.

Snapshots on Trend: High Point Furniture Market

Color, texture, and pattern is an ever changing palette for designers. Keeping a pulse on industry trends is an important part of being a creative professional. We attended the recent High Point Furniture Market and it provided us with inspiration, new color palettes, and creative techniques to bring back to our workroom and design center.

The two predominant background colors exhibited were variations of gray and taupe with pops of accent colors in plum, lavender, orange, aqua, and green. We even saw the resurgence of avocado green, rust, and mustard yellow!

Nail heads either decorative or rustic were exposed and on many of the upholstered pieces. Some were used in practical applications and others such as the diamond head upholstery nails above were used to create shiny accents and motifs within the furniture design itself.

One unique design tip we noticed was the textural accent that was created with the button forms sewn on the corner of the lavender pillow shown above. What a wonderful way to add dimension and depth to a tonal accent!

The handmade look has become infused in the design of pillows, drapery panels, lampshades and other home accents. This look also gives depth and dimension to a visually smooth surface. At market, drapery panels donned appliques and hand sewn cutouts. Pillows had felting and layers of fringe or ribbon tacked their surfaces.

The tactile experience continued with burlap and linen fabrics on everything from draperies and lampshades to bedding and floor coverings. Weaving and layering these textures in and out of designs was very popular. The juxtaposition of tailored and traditional techniques like smocking on time worn burlap created intrigue and drama in what is usually a simple accent.

Contemporary graphic prints on fabrics and floor coverings were abundant in mod hues of gray and taupe with the interesting high gloss additions of patent leather and shiny sequins and stones. Paired with these eye-catching accents were matte furniture finishes of driftwood and weathered patinas.

The take-aways from High Point were in the details! The base for much of our design as far as colorway (gray and taupe) has stayed the same over the past couple of years, but the embellishments have increased and are being used in new and different ways. Texture is the #1 take-away from the market. How you choose to use it is up to you. It can be achieved by playing with gloss and matte finishes, weaving and layering, hand-sewing appliques, and eye-catching accents like diamond head upholstery nails.

The Art of Layering Patterns

Patterns play an important role in interior design. Patterns add color, depth, dimension and texture to any room or window treatment. The scale of pattern may be small, medium or large in size and any patterns used in the same space must relate to each other in order to create a cohesive design.

When used properly, pattern can ground a design that shows two distinctly different shapes, scale and proportion. The large bold orange striped draperies in this room anchor the small scale pattern in the floor coverings. It allows the eye to see the design, color and texture as a whole and not as different distinct parts.

Believe it or not, pattern in design also signifies the shape of furnishings, lighting and accessories. This particular design is very tonal with a pop of lime in the furnishings to ground the eye away from the multi-pattern ceiling treatment. Take note of the chair back designs; they repeat the shapes in the mirrors, lighting, floor covering and the ceiling design. This is a perfect reflection of using the shapes throughout a design to create an elegant and harmonious feel within the space.

Texture is created with pattern by directional movement and contrast. These two designs use directional movement and distinct contrast in the black and white patterns. Look closely at the Chevron design on the right. Not only is it directional, it has a pattern within the pattern of a Greek Key design. This adds depth and texture.

Think about how you use pattern in your designs. How does it affect your design style? Experiment with different scales, proportions, and colors to find the right balance for your next project and signature look.

It is a place where we draw inspiration from color, texture and pattern. Out of these elements, fabric is a large part of this process and displaying it in an organized and visually pleasing manor facilitates creativity.

So, why not feature two important design elements in your studio for organization and inspiration?!

Aria Metal Hardware and Fabric

Create your Own Display
There are several ways...

1. Install a French Rod made out of Aria Metal Hardware on your wall in desired length and use clip-on rings (FM201/) to hold your fabric. This will allow easy access to your fabrics with a quick release of the clip-on ring. This version works well with light to medium weight fabric samples.

2. Install an Aria Metal Hardware pole with brackets, decorative finials, and clip-on rings to hold your fabric.

3. Install an Aria Metal Hardware pole either like a French Rod or with decorative finials. Place a small grommet (GR2/) on the corner of your fabric sample. Next place shower curtain rings (ST18 or ST19) on the rod and open the clasp. This will allow you to easily slip the grommet on the fabric swatch over the curtain ring and then snap in place. When you want to remove it, unhook the shower curtain ring clasp and pull fabric sample off the ring. This is a more secure way to hang your fabric and will support light to heavy weight draperies.

New C Ring Traverse Rod Hardware

We are so excited about our new traverse system with C rings! It has significant improvements over traditional C ring systems. The system is offered in cord draw or baton draw in Brown or White track and all components are ball bearing.

Finestra can assemble and paint your traverse systems in one of our 36 custom hand finishes. Or, you can purchase components individually and assemble and paint your own system.

Easy to Install

1. After installing the bracket securely to the wall, attach the wood fascia to bracket using one screw per bracket. Short screws are provided. The wood fascia is decorative and holds no weight.

2. Traverse track will be held in place with the support notch or “tooth” at the end of the bracket (Figure 1) and the camlock on the bracket that locks the track in place (Figure 2). When the track is in place inside the tooth of the bracket, turn the camlock with a flat head screwdriver to hold the track into place (Figure 2,3).

3. Attach the C Rings to the carriers and master carriers. Place the C rings with the prong facing downward in the square hole of the carriers. These are the top holes in the carriers. Position the rings up over the wood fascia with the prong facing the top hole in the carrier. For ease of installation, tilt the rings to the side at an angle and push into the square hole to lock into place. This will lock the ring into place and will not move or sag back down to the pole.

GLASS HOLD BACKS

One of the key design components of contemporary hardware is glass. We offer both blown solid glass and crackle glass ball finials. Recently, we had a customer ask us if we had blown glass hold backs. She wanted to hang her panels from glass hold backs in a contemporary setting. Since hanging drapery panels and tab top treatments from medallions are still very popular, we thought that this was a great idea and came up with a creative solution with the designs we already offer.

The Aria line offers 9 brushed metal finishes for the finials. You may choose from any of the 36 Finestra finishes for the wood hold back bases to accompany your glass ball finial. If you are worried about matching the wood hold backs with the metal finishes, we have a solution for that too! A very popular option is to finish the wood bases in the same color as your wall color. With our color matching, you can choose from any Ben Moore or Sherwin Williams paint color. This way the beauty of the glass shines through in your design and the bases become utilitarian and fade into the background.

Another popular treatment are French Rods. With French rods, no finials are used and the treatment simply returns back to the wall. It is very sleek and would work well in spaces where you have no space for finials or even industrial applications. It is easy to achieve this look with the Aria Metal Hardware!

French Rod Components:
1. Three metal pole pieces in selected finish and length
Two small pole pieces are for your return, and one pole is for the length of your window span. You will still need to support the span with the standard brackets FM400, so your return off of the wall is adjustable from 3.5”-5”.

2. Two Elbows FM402/ in selected finish. One pair of inside mounts FM401/ in selected finish

Once your return pole pieces are cut, attach the elbows to each side of the long pole for the window span. These return back to the wall at 90 degrees.

3. One Pair of Inside Mounts FM401/
To finish the look and for added support, install the inside mounts to the wall and place your return pole in it.
Then, it is complete!

Designer Spotlight: Debhelin Designs

Cloud Nine Finials on 3"D Smooth Pole in Old World Gold

It is always an honor when customers like Debbie Millet with Debhelin Designs share their works of art with us. Debbie is located in Louisville, KY and her designs are outstanding. She has a keen eye for color blending and great attention to detail.

One of the main architectural details above is the chocolate coffered ceilings and amber chandelier. Debbie accentuates these features by adding drama with large 3"D poles and Cloud Nine finials. By installing the pole high above the window, it draws the eye up into the beautiful ceiling. By choosing the Old World Gold finish, she has not only incorporated the chocolate/mahogany color, but also the amber chandelier with the gold accents.

Fall Reflections Hold Back in Rubbed Gold

Arched windows can create design challenges. This hold back treatment is a wonderful solution. It softens the hard lines and stark white trim by placing drapery panels on either side. It also leaves the view open to be enjoyed by all. Matching hold backs were used on both panels below to elegantly tie the drapery panels back. Beautiful!

Fleur de Lis Hold Back

Top treatments are very popular in window design. They are frequently used in kitchens and bathrooms. Debbie does a wonderful job anchoring this treatment with dark finished Fleur de Lis hold backs and dark fringe. This not only ties in with the furniture in the room, but also, stabilizes the light colored fabric from fading into the wall color.

It's Black and White!

Match decor with handpainted finials by Finestra

Black and white are classic colors in design. Today, they are important hues in adding texture and dimension to a room or window treatment.

Fur is a popular way to exhibit texture in white, black and the both combined. Upholstered sofas, pillows, ottomans and floor coverings are all good canvases for the use of fur.

Patent leather has made a comeback on the fashion scene translating into home decor. Both black and white patent leather are being used for it's modern, smooth and reflective surfaces. Upholstered furniture like the chair above used chrome metal nail heads to accent the patent leather seat. Clear vinyl is even used as the chair back to keep the reflective surface quality of the overall design.

White is crisp, clean and contemporary. It has extraordinary uses as sculptural elements and accents such as the animal heads above. The drapery finials below are also shown in a gloss white which create a clean surface for just the right amount of carving and detail to shine through.

Architectural details painted in solid white or black can add dimension and depth to a space. Light and shadows will reflect off of the detail to create an interesting visual play.

Ikat is the method of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft fibers. Studded Designs are "spiking" up everywhere! The trend for Hollywood Glam and sparkle to home decor designs continues to be a popular motif. An easy way to incorporate these "studs" into your space is by using upholstery nails and buttons. With the resurgence of upholstered goods, these nails and buttons are abundant and becoming more creative in their uses.

Sun Inspired Interiors

Interior design can center around a season, motif or overall feeling. The sun is one of those symbols that can be used to inspire a room design or seasonal decor. How can you let the sun shine through your designs?

One way is to accent the shape of the sun in a fabric or wall covering design. The cornice fabric design above uses Finestra swirl buttons and starburst buttons to accent the motif. These accents are also great on pillows, drapery headers and headboards. This draws the eye to the pattern and accentiates it within a room.

Furnishings such as mirrors in the shape of the sun is a more literal way to use the theme within a space.

Using natural sunlight in your design is a less literal way of including the sun motif. Sunlight creates bright, crisp and clean lines in a room. Painting a room white is another technique to bounce the light around the room. Adding skylights to a room or using sheers for the window coverings also enable the flow of light.

Burlap and Boas

Texture and natural fabrics are an important part of today's interior design. Juxtaposing coarse or deeply textured objects and fabrics with soft, delicate and luxurious ones creates depth and tactile interest within a room. Two such textures are Burlap and Boas(feather fringe, that is).

Burlap can come from left over upholstery remnants and even recycled coffee bags or feed bags. If you wanted to create your own motif with burlap, it is easy to print onto its canvas as well. Pillows, upholstered chairs, ottomans, table linens, and draperies are perfect accessories where burlap can be used.

Feather Fringe

Feather fringe softens the coarse texture of burlap and is available in many color ways and designs. Burlap becomes sophisticated with accents of peacock feathers and can also create ties into an avian decor theme. Whimsical features can be evoked with brightly colored or beaded feather fringe.

Draperies are one of the most dramatic ways to use burlap and often unexpected. Nautical Treatment by CHF/ Sue Fresconi/Shady Characters

What a fabulous treatment by Sue Fresconi and the CHF Academy displayed at the recent Vision '11 Expo in Las Vegas! This creative treatment features Finestra medallions with hand painted nautical flags at the top of the interior awning. A diagonal striped shade peeks through the rope-lined leading edge as if a sail boat were passing by. Ahhh...can you feel the salty breeze whisk by and the sound of waves lapping at the shore?!

Nautical Flag Alphabet

Since this display sailed and docked at the Vision Expo, the hand painted flags spell out "V.I.S.I.O.N". Spelling a name or word out onto a "nautical canvas" is made easy when using the Nautical Alphabet. Burgees can also be painted to correspond with any yacht club.

The medallions chosen for the treatment were manufactured with a screw only coming out of the back of the piece 1 1/4" so that it could be screwed directly into the top of the awning. These are custom features that Finestra can provide to aid creative designers and fabricators like Sue Fresconi.

The textures, patterns, and colors of this treatment and their ability to paint a nautical picture are truly inspirational!

Trends: Chevron Pattern

The Chevron Pattern in fabrics, rugs, bedding, draperies, furniture and flooring has re-emerged as a popular trend in home decor. The definition of chevron is a "V" shaped pattern usually pointing down. This pattern can create a bold statement with visual "pop" in a space or simply create texture with its linear pattern.

To create texture within a space, use the chevron pattern on flooring with reclaimed wood or interwoven natural fabrics. The pattern will create visual interest and depth within your design even when using natural and tone on tone elements.

Color Me Yellow

Yellow brings optimism, hope, rebirth, and renewal to interior design. Its palette varies from bright canary yellows to marigolds to hollywood golds to butter creams. Did you ever think about a drapery treatment as sculptural? All of these examples shown here are part of an art exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Roberto Capucci: Art into Fashion. These fashion "sculptures" represent contemporary fashion with a"masterful use of color".

The sculptural elements translate into the same design elements we use in drapery creation. Scale, proportion, symmetry, contrast, and balance are all taken into account and how it relates to the space or room.

Imaginative use of color, use of multiple fabrics, and decorative embellishments all aid in not only upscale fashion design, but also, in upscale drapery design.

Drawing inspiration from fashion can facilitate unique upscale designs with extraordinary attention to detail, textural layering, and creative use of color.

Designing Versailles Today

History is the basis for all design. In the time continuum, history repeats itself either by detailed replication or most often by translating elemental pieces of historic ornament, color, and style into a design. One of the most romantic and well-known places to find design inspiration is Paris, specifically Versailles.

The Grand Triannon is nestled in the north-west corner of Versailles and was the private retreat for Louis XIV built in 1687. It was a place of relaxation for the King and his courtiers.

The use of color in this room dating back to 1687 directly relates to the color trends of 2011. The juxtaposition of the purple tone against the subtle golden yellow and beige neutrals is interpreted in the designers' canvases of today. An additional modern focus of this room design is to "bring the outdoors in". The neutral tones of the fabric draping the windows create a frame to the outdoor floral and fauna and allow the eye to focus on bringing in the color and texture of the outdoors.

The Emperor's bedchamber as shown above consisted of five rooms in his private apartment. This particular room was decorated under Louis XV and still exists today. The linens were woven in the Lyons for Josephine in 1807.

The neutral tones of this room resemble a room of the 21st Century. The design incorporates an up-to-date color palette with subtle neutrals that blend with gray blues, lilacs, and silver and gold metallics. It resembles the subtle Hollywood glamour that is popular today. The Emperor's bed design is a very linear and masculine design and brings in feminine touches of color in the floral accents of the floor covering.

The King's Grand Apartment in the Palace was created in the 1670s and included seven salons or drawing rooms overlooking the gardens.

The 2011 color of the year appears in the King's Grand Apartment. This color is bold, confident, and courageous like the King himself. Since many of the King's salons were used for entertaining and socializing, a lively and confident color was only fitting.

Other design ideas can be taken from various elements of the room. Much of contemporary design today is tonal with accents of bold color. A unique way to add bold color to a design is to accentuate prominent accessories in the room. Lighting is one such accessory that may be a focal point for the finish, texture or design style. Inserting color by hanging the light fixture by cording or a decoratively colored tassel is a unique installation that can be translated into any decor style.

Design inspiration can be found everywhere, but history will re-invent itself over and over. Trends are new definitions of old history, spun in an unusual or unexpected way. Visiting museums, period homes and thumbing through old catalogs and history books can inspire you to take your own twist on elemental design and create new trends for the future.

Brass is Back

Brass is back with a classy and contemporary twist. The finish is being used to tie in modern and eclectic genres by minimally using it throughout the design. The soft glow of brass can also be responsible for warming up a space or showing off subtle Hollywood glamour.

So don't throw away your brass fixtures or replace the brass hardware on your furniture! This is your chance to update your space in a new way!

Brass often accents modern patterns in wall coverings and fabrics like the bed covering shown above. It can also be used in Asian inspired designs, Moroccan motifs, and traditional living spaces. Designer Carrie Antonello with Tuscan Touch Designs and Cathy Cuddington with Dogwood Designs are responsible for this fabulous before and after transformation. As you can see their work was cut out for them to elevate this 80's color palette into a much warmer and sophisticated modern day design.

Carrie and Cathy were able to lift the veil off of this dated design and open the room up substantially by adding custom hardware and raising the draperies above the arched window. Instead of replacing the existing wall covering which is more prominent in the Before photo, the gold tones were picked up in the header of the drapery and pulled throughout the length of the fabric panels creating a more luxurious and cohesive design.

Even more impressive as professionals, they did not stop at a good design. Their attention to the smallest detail in the draperies created a fantastic custom design...the Pièce de résistance...They matched the hand-rubbed finishes of the drapery hardware and furnishings by adding Flower Button embellishments by Finestra to the goblet pleats at the top of the drapery. In the Middle Ages, all books were hand-written original works of art. These "illuminated" manuscripts were so called because of their frequent incorporation of gold or sometimes silver leaf onto the page. Illumination comes from the Latin word illuminare,

Rise above the Ordinary...

Illumination occurs when accent pieces are chosen wisely to coordinate with the design. The photo shown above is a perfect example of using drapery hardware to "light up" your design. As you can see, the bright gold leaf was not used on both the poles and the rings. This would have caused it to either fade away into the background or create a "bright light" detracting from the cohesion of modern design. Instead, this designer used the bright gold leaf with an accent of blackened bronze to tie the finishes of the room together, and to incorporate the varying textures and patterns placed throughout the room.

Other ways to illuminate your designs are through accents of furniture, lighting, fabrics, mirrors, and wall coverings.

Polka dots first became popular on clothing in Britain in the late 19th Century and were associated more often than not with designs for children. Custom Carved Drapery Hardware: The Install

Grand Designs can create challenging installations especially when you are dealing with these statistics:

30ft ceilings

24" crown molding from window to ceiling

855 yards of Dupioni Silk

48 large tassels

6ft custom carved plaques straight and mitered for corner installation

Challenge:

After designing the beautiful custom plaque and its placement, how was it going to be installed? There was concern of the weight of the plaque along with the 30ft drapes that would hang from them. In addition, the large crown molding was from window to ceiling. Luckily we received permission from the homeowners to be able to install into the crown molding. But, we only had about a 3"space to fit any kind bracket or attachment for securing the massive treatment.

Solution:

We used 2"D steel plumbing pipe with flanges that attached to the crown molding and protruded 8" off of the wall. Then, we fastened a 1 1/2" steel pipe with flange onto the plaque and slid it into the 2"D pipe coming off of the wall. A hole was drilled through each pipe to insert a bolt through as a set screw and securely fastened with a large nut.

Installation in progress hoisting the 30ft draperies and plaques in place. It took five of us to guide the long panels from the floor to the scaffolding while winding its way up to the top.

View from second story balcony of the installation in progress. In order to hide the steel pipe used to attach the carved plaques to the wall, Regina made a sleeve out of silk to hide it. The other option would be to hand finish it to match with the fabric or wall trim.

What a fabulous project to be involved in! From start to finish it was an engineering feat to figure out the scale, design and installation of the beautiful carvings! The result is astounding and an inspiration to any designer or manufacturer like Finestra.

Designing Custom Carved Drapery Hardware

Luxurious projects call for luxurious details. One way to give your client a truly unique and spectacular design is to use custom, hand-carved drapery hardware.

Regina Kindelberger with Over The Top Designs, Inc. recently had a project of grand scale with spectacular architectural details in an entry room of almost 3,000sq/ft. The large room boasted ceilings of 30ft with huge crown molding and floor to ceiling windows. There were two main obstacles to tackle with the project, its sheer size combined with a challenging installation.

Any standard drapery hardware would be lost in the scale of the room, so she set out for a solution and teamed up with Finestra. After I visited the site, it was clear that this project needed something fantastic!

Every design at Finestra starts with a sketch and is hand carved or sculpted by an artist. After the drawing was approved, our artist hand carved the original piece out of walnut. The dimensions span almost 6ft long and 3ft high!

To get the most value for the original wood carving and mold making, we took 3 more design elements out of the original large plaque. We used the center piece for side panels, and the very center medallion we used as a "napkin ring" tie back that included a ring molded into the back of the medallion that helped hold the fabric in place.

After designing a unique carving for this project, the next challenge was the installation!

Ripplefold Draperies offer a very clean, contemporary look to your window treatments.

Simply sew the Rowley ST40/B or ST40/O snap tape to your flat drapery panel and then snap the panels into place on the ripplefold carriers. This creates uniform folds in the panel that flow in and out of the track. This system is good for both residential and commercial treatments alike.

Ripplefold treatments also allow more of the window to show, letting more light into the room due to its tight stack back.

Installation may be made with a ceiling bracket or or wall mount. By using a routed wood fascia, the track can be concealed by using ceiling mount clips (M-392/W) inside the wood fascia to hold the track in place and extending a wall bracket off of the ceiling mount clips to install to the wall.

Decorative hardware is a wonderful way to decorate bare tracking systems and match decor with hand rubbed finishes.

When choosing a luxurious gown, it is important that the designs are displayed in a luxurious setting. The Little White Dress has done an extraordinary job of combining wedding fashion with warm wood tones to create an inviting, elegant feel. The hardware becomes an important design feature not only for display, but also, to anchor the array of white dresses.

All of the fixtures used above are 2"D wood poles on 7" return brackets with the Imperial Shell (1302) as an accent on the front of the brackets. The poles are finished in Old World Gold with an extra high gloss clear coat to protect the hangers from scratching the poles. In addition to the display fixtures, a grand entrance was created to the dressing rooms with the Isabella finials (1071). Just beautiful!

Easy Installation Technique

Place a #12 Grommet at the top of your panels and simply slip them right over the hold back attachment (stem). Multiple layers may be used as in the treatment shown above. To finish the installation, screw the decorative design to the front of the attachment.

Try a unique way to hang drapery panels or valances from grommets!

Use grommets along with specially cut drapery rings to hang flat valances from a decorative drapery rod. With a small slice removed from the ring, it can slide into the grommet. The screw eye that normally holds the drapery pin serves as a back-stop for the grommet, ensuring it stays in place.
